Just Watched Super Size Me

On a long drive to Stevens Pass for snowboarding, Ali, Charlotte, Chris, Pooja and I stopped by a McDonalds for breakfast a few months back. We talked about this movie that I was meaning to see, but apparently it was a must see: Super Size Me. So, I watched it this weekend. And I can't say I will be digging into a chicken McNugget with the same zeal ever again. I don't have a moral agenda against the food companies - people have to take self responsibility at some point. And I am definitely not a health freak - I have a standing membership to the Pro-Club but use the steam room more often than the weights room. But, seeing the food for what it is (a concoction of sugar, fat and additives) in raw form really puts a clamp on your tastebuds. It also amazed me how little politicians talk about the problems this causes openly. Healthcare seems to be at the top of everyones list of issues but preventative healthcare seems to be a taboo to talk about. It's one of the strangest things in American politics - people skirt around issues to blame others rather than look at themselves. Anyway, for now I am cutting down on my Big Macs and sticking to the stomach destroying curries instead!

MySpace IM: 17 Million Users

TechCrunch reports that MySpace IM is now at 17M users. That's an impressive number although I would love to see data on engagement around this. I think the trend of seeing social networking sites adding communications experiences is going to continue. Luckily for Spaces, we started off with the two biggest communications services, Hotmail and MSN Messenger.

Despite the debut of MySpaceIM back in September 2006, the company will formally launch the service on Wednesday. Not many services can “launch” with 17 million users worldwide, making MySpace IM one of the largest IM clients already (AIM, by comparison, has 63 million users).

Features include integration with MySpace profiles and comments, a music player that plays tracks from MySpace profiles, and the ability to send “zaps” (sound bites) to friends. Don’t go fooling yourself that the IM client’s success has anything to do with the feature set, however: MySpaceIM is big because MySpace is. By those numbers, about 10% of users were coerced into making the download.

Semel Out, Yang In

Wow.

I knew it was coming, but it's kind of sobering to read it for real. Terry Semel announced that he would be stepping down as CEO of Yahoo!, to be replaced by the co-founder Jerry Yang. For years, Semel had been pitched as the guy to transform Yahoo! into a "media company" and had Hollywood aflutter with his moves. But by all reckonings, Silicon Valley types considered him to be an outsider in world dominated by people born and bred on the Internet. Despite Yahoo! woes, it is a great business and does a good job of monetizing it's users. It fell apart in Search and a few of the other strategic priorities (e.g. Social Media) called out. I will be curious to see the direction Yang takes the company.
